Men’s Physique Key Judging Elements

Men’s physique competitors should display:

  • Round full muscle bellies with more roundness than a men’s fitness competitor.
  • Even proportion from upper to lower body.
  • Even conditioning through the upper and lower body. 
  • Wide shoulders and back to give the appearance of a V taper.
  • Small waist and tight defined midsection with detailed visible abdominal muscles (six pack and obliques).
  • Tight abdominal control and no bloating/distension displayed in front and side poses.
  • Balanced quads with sweep to the outer quad.
  • Clear muscle separation and striations in the quads.
  • Separation between the quads and hamstrings in side poses.
  • Visible hamstring separation.
  • Confident masculine style posing and stage presence.
  • Men’s physique competitors should use either open fist posing style or a combination of open and closed fist posing rather than all closed fist posing. 
  • Men’s physique competitors are required to wear a square cut style of posing trunks that are a minimum of 8.5cm wide at the sides.

Judges are not looking for:

  • Thick, blocky midsection.
  • A bulky or blocky muscle structure.
  • Extreme conditioning to the detriment of muscle fullness and shape.
  • Narrow back unable to flare lats to display x shape structure.
  • Water retention.
  • Loose skin.
  • Gynecomastia.
  • Abdominal distention.
  • Visible straining in facial expressions when posing.
  • Narrow / thin sided traditional bodybuilding posing trunks are not permitted (a minimum of 8.5cm wide at the sides is required).
